A 'foul smell' is coming from the River Clyde as residents have contacted the News about the situation.
Archie Burleigh, who lives in the Meigle near Skelmorlie, told the News that it is causing quite a 'stink' along the coastline. There have also been reports of a foul smell in Millport, Fairlie and West Kilbride this morning.
Archie said: "I have no idea what it is but I can see that the a long stretch of the sea near Bute is blue like it might be a huge algae bloom which happened last year.
"It is a very foul smell - like raw fish.
"It really is awful."
A spokesperson for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) said: “We are not aware of any ongoing issues from sites we regulate which may give rise to a raw fish-like odour. We have also liaised with North Ayrshire Council following these reports.
“If members of the public identify offensive odour from SEPA regulated sites, we would encourage them to contact us through our pollution hotline on 0800 80 70 60. Odour from non-SEPA regulated activities should be reported to the local authority’s Environmental Health Department.”
Residents and visitors to Largs were amazed to see the water off the town turn a beautiful teal last summer due to algae bloom, with large quantities of the microscopic species changing the colour of the water. See more here
