A North Ayrshire resident is understood to have died close to the railway line between Fairlie and Largs.
Emergency services responded on Tuesday evening to what is believe to have been a medical incident.
Rail services were stopped for three hours, from around 8.40pm, as transport police and paramedics attended the scene.
The local resident was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
A British Transport Police spokesperson said today: "Officers were called to the line near Largs at around 8.10pm on Tuesday, February 27 following reports of a medical emergency occurring lineside.
"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene."
British Transport Police confirmed that it was not a trespassing incident.
