Ross Irwin provided the 'News' with the photos and said: "Happy new year folks, just back in from taking photos of the northern lights which were just visible from the west side of the island."
Another photographer Peter Watkins managed a super shot from Portencross and said: "Happy New Year - the aurora over the Clyde taken from Portencross overlooking Millport. at 1-45am "
And Paul Messenger also captured a spectacular aurora photo at Portrncross.
An aurora alert was issued earlier in the evening with other sightings in Oban.
