North Ayrshire Council has halted its new contactless payment system in nine schools, including Largs Academy.
The system, which uses facial recognition, came into use on Monday for pupils to pay for meals quickly.
The authority says it has had a number of 'enquiries' about the system, and has reverted to its PIN system while the enquiries are considered.
A spokesperson said: "We apologise for any inconvinience this may cause and hope to be in a position to offer a further update in the very near future."
