Largs Thistle legend George Wall writes for the News about football matters local, national and international...

While I have had a few 'discussions' with referees over the years, the abuse given to Anthony Taylor and his family after refereeing Wednesday night’s Europa League final between Roma and Sevilla was disgraceful. Really out of order. A quote attributed to Jock Stein springs to my mind: “If you’re good enough, the referee doesn’t matter.” In my 10 years at Largs as a player I was sent off four times. One of those was for a verbal on the ref at a game against Craigmark and I made it easy for him to give me my marching orders that day. You need to give refs respect on the park. I always found that way better.

Congratulations to Cumnock on winning the Scottish. Not a great game to watch but the Cumnock players and fans won’t care about that.

What an epic game, Ross County v Partick Thistle. I did think Ross County would stay in the Premiership however Partick really should have beaten them after being 3-0 up on aggregate, with 20 minutes left in the game. A great comeback by County. Penalties, as we all know, can go either way. I was involved in two penalty shoot outs with Largs and we lost both. One against Dairy, my effort landed in Kilbirnie and lost us the game. Partick manager Kris Dolan, who is ex Kello and Talbot, spoke really well in his interview after the game. Just not your day Kris. On Saturday we have the Champions League final, Man City v Inter Milan. I don’t know much about Inter but they do have match winners in their squad such as Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martínez. Will they out shine Erling Haaland? I am thinking it’s City’s time to win it. Should be a good final.

The transfer window will soon open up for the season ahead. It will be interesting to see who goes where at the top level. Will Harry Kane leave Spurs? Again, he seems to be the major subject of transfer speculation but would it make him any less of a player if he goes through his career without winning a trophy?

Largs Thistle 35s, sponsored by Cullis Amusements, had a great win away from home on Friday against Ardeer. Despite having a number of call-offs which reduced the squad, they came away with a 5-4 victory. This week it’s another away league game against Stewarton.
