The Largs and Millport Weekly News has been praised in the Scottish Parliament for its role "among papers at the heart of their communities” after winning local campaign of the year at the 2023 Press Awards for ‘Alara’s Little Legs’ campaign.
Our support for the bid to raise enough cash for Alara Kavak to get the life-changing surgery she needs to help her walk was recognised with the ‘Local Campaign of the Year’ accolade.
Now Scottish Labour MSP Paul O’Kane has praised the News in a motion, which highlighted that both the Wee Paper and the Greenock Telegraph had played their part in raising awareness of campaigns for people in their respective local communities.
Paul said: “I attended the 2023 Press Awards and was delighted to see the Greenock Telegraph and Largs and Millport Weekly News get recognised for their campaign work.
“These are two well respected papers, two local papers at the heart of their communities, covering the issues that matter to local people, they are well connected to the issues and concerns of their local areas and don’t hesitate to play their part to help.
“The importance of local journalism can’t be emphasised enough, local papers ensure that local voices are heard and I commend both the Greenock Telegraph and Largs and Millport Weekly News for demonstrating that.”
