The countdown is on to one of the highlights of the summer in Largs - the annual Largs Flower Show.

The eagerly anticipated event sees local growers, flower arrangers, handi-crafters, bakers and children have been busy preparing their exhibits.

The Largs Flower Show, a celebration of horticulture and crafts, staged by Largs and District Horticultural Society, is the oldest event still being held in the town.

It brings together people of all age groups to celebrate what is being produced and created in the local area.

Flower, pot plant and vegetable growers; flower arrangers; crafters and bakers; children; schools and nurseries and community gardens, and allotment holders will all be participating and enjoying getting together to appreciate the local talents and share hints and tips.

Alongside the main classes there is a range of special classes for first time exhibitors and school pupils, including one for a vase of flowers from your garden and one for any three vegetables grown by you - as well as the return of the H.T. Honeyman Medal for a vase of six roses.

Sponsored classes include:

- A Viking shield made from flowers, greenery and other natural materials (sponsored by the Largs Viking Festival)

- A 'bake-off' for one decorated cake (sponsored by West Coast Cakes)

- A 'Little Magical Garden' window box for nursery/early years classes (sponsored by Haylie Convenience Stores)

- A basket of produce grown or made at school, for primary school classes (Cardwell Garden Centre Challenge Trophy).

A National Vegetable Society Medal will also be awarded for the best vegetable in the show.

The show takes place on Saturday, August 26 at the Dunn Memorial Hall at St John's Church in Bath Street, from 10am until 4.30pm.

There is still time to get involved, too: exhibitors can go to www.largshorticultural.org.uk to see the full schedule and check out photographs of past entries.

Entries must be brought to the hall between 12 noon and 6pm on Friday, August 25, ahead of judging starting at 6.30pm. Help is available to stage your entries.

Flower arranging and decorative classes must be booked four days in advance. If you need further details contact the organisation's honorary secretary, Etta Strachan, on 01475 689423.
