A kayak challenge starting in Largs and including a circular route of the Isle of Cumbrae is taking place next month to co-incide with the Viking Festival.
Coastworks Cumbrae Challenge is an 18-kilometre challenge on Saturday, September 9 with prizes awarded and several classes of entry.
The major event sponsor is Coastworks, with the event, run in conjunction with the Cairnies Quay Mooring Association, taking place on the penultimate day of the Viking Festival.
The route around the Island of Great Cumbrae course is dependent on the wind direction and will be announced before the race briefing.
The course starts at Cairnies Quay, and goes 5.7km south west to Farland Point, and then cross 2km to Millport bay, then paddle 7km up the west of the island, and then round the northern tip of the island towards the ferry slipway. There follows a 1.8km journey back across the channel.
Entries are accepted for Junior (under 18 but 14 and over on the day of the race) Junior Sea kayak (under 18, and 14 and over) Junior Paddleboard (under 18, and 14 and over ) Open Adult male (=18+) Open Adult female (=18+) Adult male Sea Kayak (=18+) Adult female Sea kayak (=18+) Para-canoe Female Para-canoe Male Adult Paddleboard (=18+).
