A CARE centre in Millport has been praised for its staff, but improvements are needed, following its latest inspection.
Officials visited Millport Care Centre in George Street, run by Sanctuary Care Limited, over three days in September and carried out an unannounced inspection.
The care home provides care for up to 27 adults on the island with a range of learning and physical disabilities.
The facility scored one of the top marks for its leadership, but only an adequate score for the setting.
Inspectors found that there were several strengths that outweighed areas for improvement in their latest report such as "the warm and genuine relationships" between people living in the home and the staff.
The report stated: "During our observations, we saw people have fun and create social bonds, this enabled people to build and maintain meaningful relationships with those around them.
"People were encouraged to make choices and to maintain their abilities and independence."
It also found that recording systems for ongoing health and wellbeing monitoring had been adapted to be more effective and informative, however, there was a possibility of a delay in people receiving the healthcare they need.
Inspectors added: "We saw that whilst there had been improvements in this recording, there was at times, gaps in the information recorded and it was not always clear how this informed next steps or support provided.
"We were informed by external professional that 'sometimes staff accompany residents to appointments and aren't sure what they are here for or if advice given previously has been followed'.
"This may result in a delay in people receiving the healthcare they require. The monitoring information was not always linked to people's personal plans, risk assessments or daily recordings."
It was noted that due to the layout of the building, there was a lack of private space for people to use as break-out spaces, relaxation or to host visitors. It was suggested that the organisation could be creative with the outdoor area around the home to provide additional space for people.
Meanwhile, it was highlighted that people in the facility can expect support to be provided by staff who are trained, competent and skilled.
The report continued: "There has been a substantial increase in compliance with core training and condition-specific training which has been sourced and rolled out across the team. The manager acknowledged that there are still gaps in training across the staff team and that this continues to be an area for improvement.
"As well as ensuring all staff have received appropriate training, it is important to evaluate the impact of training, to ensure the knowledge and understanding gained is being put into practice."
