Proposals for a new access ramp at the lifeboat station in Largs have been lodged with council bosses.
The RNLI is seeking permission for a new dedicated ramp at the head of the beach to allow the lifeboat safe access to and from the water at low tide.
If given the green light, a short reinforced concrete structure with compacted stone infill will be built.
The lifeboat is currently launched from the North Ayrshire Council slipway, next to the lifeboat station, using a tractor and a trailer.
But the RNLI says the current state of the slipway makes it unsuitable for use at low water.
Stuart Hannell, the lifeboat charity's regional estates manager for Scotland, states in the application: "The condition of the slipway, and excessive marine growth present a significant risk to the health and safety of the crew."
The proposals which can be viewed publicly on North Ayrshire Council's planning portal are currently pending consideration.
Largs RNLI has been approached for comment.
