Heavy rain has resulted in a drain being overwhelmed leading to flooding on a major trunk road between Largs and Fairlie.
Flooding near the Largs Yacht Haven entrance developed on Wednesday evening and restrictions have been in place ever since.
A message was sent out by Amey, who carry out road maintenance, at 10.50pm on Wednesday evening to warn motorists about the flooding issue, with the problem persisting ever since.
The News has received reports that a burn culvert running under the road has collapsed under the south bound carriageway and emergency repairs are required.
Largs resident Archie Burleigh said: "The A78 at the bottom of Kelburn Golf Course brae at the 17th green moved onto traffic lights on Thursday evening.
"The burn culvert running under the road from the golf course has collapsed under the southbound carriageway and emergency repairs are required."
A spokesperson for Amey said: "Investigations are currently ongoing due to flooding on the A78 near Largs Yacht Haven that has been caused due to unprecedented levels of rainfall in recent weeks flowing from adjacent land, which has overwhelmed the drain.
"The drain is located under the carriageway surface and a programme of emergency repairs are to be undertaken once investigations have concluded. These repairs will be communicated in due course.
"Road users are advised to drive to the conditions, reduce their speed, and allow for surface water at the location to ensure their safety and that of our workforce."
