WORK has begun to resolve the long-running flooding problem on the A78 just south of Largs.

As the News previously reported, a fault has been identified near the entrance to Largs Yacht Haven by roads maintenance firm Amey.

Much of the marina's car park has been left under water since heavy rain at the start of November, while the pedestrian underpass beneath the Largs-Glasgow railway line has also been submerged.

But excavation work will not start until next week, the News has been told.

Independent councillor Ian Murdoch said: "The Scottish Gas pipe had sandbags surrounding it, and strong water flow would appear to have dislodged them and they have blocked the culvert.

"Amey will continue to try to unblock the culvert as much as they can at the moment.

"However, they can't do any excavation until Scottish Gas are on site and that will not be until Monday November 27.

"Amey will also be clearing the water from the pedestrian underpass today.

"I have asked for action to be taken on all of the rainwater drains at this location as it turns out that some are just soakaway drains and not connected to main outfall."

With concerns over plunging temperatures and colder weather over the coming days, Amey will also have a gritter on site all weekend as a safety precaution.
