A COMMUNITY cinema is coming to Barrfields Theatre in Largs in the new year - and News readers are being asked what blockbuster movies they would like to see.
Largs Community Council (LCC) has been looking at bringing a community cinema to the town for some time - and are going to hold a trial run at Barrfields, starting in January, with all proceeds going to the North Ayrshire Foodbank.
Patricia Perman told LCC's latest meeting that she has been in contact with the Church of the Nazarene in Saltcoats, who operate a mobile cinema facility.
She explained: "We found out about this mobile cinema from Largs Academy, who have been showing films at the school, and the big mobile cinema with a 24 feet by 13 foot screen also includes surround sound.
"It all sounds fantastic - they hire the facility from the Church of Nazarene from Saltcoats who also provide a DVD or movie.
"We are working out the costings but all the proceeds for using their facility goes to the North Ayrshire Foodbank so there is a community benefit as well.
"In order for it to be a success, we would require 80 people watching the film at £5 per head.
"We have a project fund which could help underwrite it in case we don't get that number, and Largs Academy are happy to get involved and help do some promotion - we are also going to train two or three ushers and we can provide them with torches and hi-vis vests."
Community council secretary Linda Smith said that the key to the community cinema's success was selecting the most popular movies.
Patricia replied: "We also want to survey Largs and Millport News readers and ask them what particular films they would like to see at the community cinema.
"We think the likes of Barbie, Mission Impossible, and Indiana Jones might be popular.
"I think the important selling point too is that the proceeds are going to the North Ayrshire Foodbank."
