FILM fans have delivered their verdict on the 'trial run' of the new Largs Community Cinema...and their verdict is that it's a smash hit.
The initiative is being trialled by Largs Community Council (LCC), who chose last year's summer blockbuster Barbie as their first showing on Friday night.
Last year's summer blockbuster, starring Margot Robbie in the title role, is still very much in the headlines following the announcement of this year's Academy Award nominations just a few days ago.
That made it an ideal choice for LCC to launch their venture at Barrfields Theatre in Vikingar - with many cinema-goers dressing up for the big occasion.
Community councillor Jamie Black told the News: "It was a great night. We sold nearly 150 tickets and there was a lovely atmosphere.
"Quite a few folks were asking what the next movie will be.
"A big credit to Patricia and Jim [Perman, the LCC members who came up with the idea] for all their hard work. They put a huge effort into making it happen."
Largs Community Council has been looking at bringing a community cinema to the town for some time and is holding a trial run at Barrfields, with all proceeds going to the North Ayrshire Foodbank.
Patricia Perman spoke of her hopes that the community will get behind the new cinema project.
She said: "We selected Barbie as it was the film that everyone has been talking about, and is one of the most popular films of the past year."
LCC charged just £5 for admission, with all proceeds going to the North Ayrshire Foodbank through an arrangement for the mobile cinema, which was hired from the Church of Nazarene in Ardrossan.
As well as usher training, Largs Academy pupils also played their part by creating promotional posters which were placed on shop windows and noticeboards around the town.
The move to bring the cinema back to the town has been widely welcomed, including by the retired ex-projectionist at Vikingar, Willie McIntyre, who spoke to the News recently of his delight at the venture.
And movie buffs who headed along to the Barbie screening told the News that it was a very enjoyable experience.
Steve Fountain, co-pastor of the Church of The Nazarene in Largs, said: "It was so much fun - what a wonderful addition to our community. Eager to see what's next!"
And cinemagoer Kim McLeod said: "Thank you to Largs Community Council for organising the cinema. Great night and look forward to more."
