The director of a one-act play being performed at Barrfields Theatre has told the News it is one of the best scripts she has ever read.

Largs Players is bringing 'It's Behind You' to Barrfields Theatre on March 2, starting at 7.30pm.

Maggie Cunningham said local audiences are in for a 'treat'.

The production will be the first airing for the play before it goes in front of a judging panel at the Scottish Community Drama Association (SCDA) One Act Play Festival.

The one-act play by Alan McHugh stars well-known local performers Matthew Wilkin and Danny Lindsay and will take audiences to somewhere they have never been before - inside the dressing room.

In a theatre dressing room shared by the famous panto double act of Norrie and Nicky, a panto dame and silly boy co-star, the play tells the story of comedy and tragedy in equal measure.

Maggie told the News: "It is one of the funniest and best things that I have ever read and had a lot pathos throughout.

"It basically the story of a father and son basically set in the dressing room after the performance, and is very panto-esque.

"It is written by Alan McHugh who is very well known in the Scottish acting circuit.

"We are very lucky to have two great actors to take on the parts - Matt Wilkin can turn his hand to anything and is so adept, having appeared in countless productions for Largs Players, while Danny Lindsay has so often played the silly boy co-star,.

"The show is very Scottish in terms of its humour, and is very earthy in places, shall we say, with a lot of swear words.

Largs and Millport Weekly News:

Playing this role of a panto dame character sees Matt, pictured above, follow in his dad Jon’s footsteps as young Matt watched his dad entertain local audiences for many years as Largs Players traditional panto dame.

But Matt himself knows the magic of panto having played the Beast in Beauty and the Beast, Prince in Snow White and comically villainous Jack Frost in the Snow Queen during his 30-plus years of performing.

Playing a panto ‘silly boy’ is a role Danny is very familiar with as he’s brought joy to many family pantomimes at Barrfields over the years as Wishee Washee in Aladdie and Gordy Greggs (Sleeping Beauty), as well as playing villains including Captain Hook in Peter Pan.

Danny also played the title role of Peter Pan in the Players' adults only panto last year.

Danny graduated from college in in theatre and performance, and although he is no stranger to pantomime. In 2022 he made his musical debut for the club playing the lead role of Davy in our smash hit production of Sunshine on Leith.

The one act play will later be performed in Greenock where it is competing to go through to the next round of the Scottish One Act Play Festival in Castle Douglas at the beginning of April, and Maggie believes it it a strong contender.

For competition rules, the play has to be the maximum of one hour, and Largs Players have also lined up other entertainment on the evening, with top talent from Largs Academy performing extracts from The Importance of Being Earnest and Be My Baby.
