Work has started on the provision of a food larder on Cumbrae.
Premises have been identified at the Garrison in Millport, and volunteers have came forward.
It follows the successful launch of the Largs Community Larder at Largs Library last month, as well as other community larders throughout the district including in West Kilbride.
Its aim is to provide dignified and affordable access to food for those who are struggling to make ends meet.
The set-up works on a membership basis, and the larder provides a way for locals who are struggling to make ends meet to top up their weekly shop, with their own choice of foods available.
At Largs, in return for a payment of £4, each family that uses the West Kilbride larder can get access to shopping worth £12 - while a payment of £5 opens up access to items worth £20. A similar formula is expected to be used for the Millport larder when it opens.
According to a recent document handed to councillors at the North Coast Locality Partnership, which covers Largs, Fairlie, Millport, Skelmorlie and West Kilbride, an initial meeting with volunteers in Millport has been held regards setting up the island larder.
The name of the larder will be ‘Millport Community Shop’ and will be based in an outhouse facility in the Garrison.
Ideas for logo for marketing purposes are with the design team, while a fridge, freezer and shelving for the facility have been ordered.
Unlike a food bank, the larder is not an emergency food provision, and no referral is required.
Community larders operate on a drop-in basis but if members prefer, they can book an appointment during opening times.
