THE festive lights in Largs will shine on once again this Christmas thanks to a donation from the Colin Weir Charitable Foundation.

The organisation has provided £10,000 to help light up the town over the festive period .

A spokesperson for Largs Events, which organises the annual donation said: "We are delighted to announce that, on behalf of Largs Events, we would like to thank The Colin Weir Charitable Foundation for their most generous donation.

"This donation is to be used towards the purchase and upgrade of Largs Christmas lighting, PAT testing and insurance.

Largs and Millport Weekly News:

"The committee, whilst considering the current lighting stock, are now working in conjunction with suppliers, to see the most effective way this can be utilised.

"We are hopeful that this will make a noticeable impact from this coming festive period and are most grateful to the Foundation, whose generous donation will enable us to do so."

The Foundation aims to support Scottish-based community groups and small charities.

It was set up in 2013 as the Weir Charitable Trust by the late Colin Weir and his then wife Chris, two years after they scooped a £161 million Euromillions jackpot.

Since then it has helped install a new 3G pitch at Barrfields Park, supported the ongoing operation of the paddle steamer Waverley, and helped talented young artists and Scottish sporting talent.

Mr Weir died in 2019 after a short illness.
