A HISTORIAN from Fairlie has been given a top honour for his "outstanding contribution" to Ayrshire's history.
John Riddell is the author of numerous books on the Clyde.
His most recent work, Fairlie’s Secret War, uncovers the role of the top secret Anti-Submarine Experimental Establishment which was housed in the village during the Second World War.
He has now become the latest recipient of the John Strawhorn Memorial Quaich, an annual award presented by the Ayrshire Federation of Historical Societies to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to recording the history and heritage of the area.
Professor Elaine McFarland, the federation's chair, said: “Following a distinguished career as a civil engineer, John has made his mark as a much respected historian of Ayrshire and the Clyde. He is a worthy recipient of this award."
John received his award at Fairlie Parish Church, where he has been a frequent newsletter contributor over recent years, on Sunday, May 26.
He has also given many historical talks in the area on topics ranging from Fairlie's hidden WW2 story to the Fife yachts which were built in the village.
