In this week's delve into the archives, we had back 52 years to 1972 - and the days when the News was still a broadsheet!

The top three movies of the period were The Godfather, Last Tango in Paris, and Deliverance.

Jon Pertwee as Doctor Who was battling against new villains such as The Sea Devils, while  familiar foes returned in the shape of the Daleks who were making their debut on colour television.

And there was controversy on ITV as Bob Monkhouse was axed from presenting popular quiz show The Golden Shot, to be replaced by Robert Vaughan.

Closer to home, children from Fairlie Parish Church put on a production of 'Peter Pan' at Red Cross House in Largs. 

Meanwhile Largs Boys Brigade were looking prim and proper for their official inspection.

Fairlie Youth Club were taking part in a 'Service to Others' programme which involved the teens putting on a special music show at the Village Hall including the band Taboo which was made up of Ian Hepburn, Stephen Finlay, Gordon McNeil and Christian Sabbaterie.

And Gallowgate Square had been redecorated in Largs for a new look to provide a pleasant outlook for visitors.

The News reported: "This is a new ornamental enclosure in Gallowgate Square. In the centre is the site of the old water pump. Tulips in the flowerbeds make for an attractive display."

And no trip back to the 1970s is complete without a visit to the dartboard and the popular district league that boasted players from all over Largs and the surrounding area.

The sharpest shooters were the Brisbane Lounge Bar who won the Largs and District Darts League and the knockout cup.
