A new community group is being formed in Largs to help promote local business and bring more tourism to the town.

A variety of ideas are being looked into including a spend local campaign, a community hub, a local radio station and an online platform to help promote shops in the town and events.

The Visit Largs group is an umbrella group of the Largs Community Development Trust which was formed earlier this year - an initiative which is looking at providing a range of improvements to the town from sprucing up green spaces, to looking for a suitable site for a community centre with plans for the former St John's Church.

One of the other key factors is to open a community hub which will provide the community with a safe space with various organisations involved from credit unions to Women's Aid, and will also be a first stop shop for community events and advice.

Heather Meldrum, who is leading the initiative on behalf of the development trust, said: "This is an exciting new development for the town that has been led by the residents in the town.

"It is grassroots resident led, and we are hoping to make positive changes which will leave a lasting impact and make Largs a must visit destination by helping to promote the town online and through social media platforms, and identifying new opportunities.

"We have further plans to set up a community radio station and we hope to provide more details soon.

"There are a lot of events happening this year in the town and we hope that we can help promote them too as part of the town's general appeal."

Advisor Alan Hill said: "It is an exciting initiative to help improve the local business environment and develop tourism and support local shops. I am very heartened by the support that the local community has given so far.

"It is now becoming increasingly important to have a strong online and social media presence and this will be a key factor in helping to promote the town and what it has to offer going forward."

The Visit Largs group have engaged RS Consultancy to carry out a voluntary business survey so there are some baseline figures in which the group can act upon and help the town grow, which will help demonstrate a need for funding applications.
