A DRUG addict who admitted shoplifting from two stores in Largs has been given the legal equivalent of a slap on the wrists after a sheriff heard she was trying to turn her life around.

Kirsty Donnachie from Prospecthill Road, Greenock, was caught stealing several items from a local store and a charity shop in December 17, 2022.

The 47-year-old's record includes offences of shoplifting dating back to 1997.

Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard that, while acting with another, she stole a quantity of clothing from Mooring Knitwear on Main Street.

Then, at the nearby Cancer Research shop. again while acting with another, she stole an item of clothing.

The procurator fiscal depute told Kilmarnock Sheriff Court: “An employee in the first shop observed the accused lifting several items. She then left the store.

“The accused made her way to a charity shop and, again she was noticed selecting items, in this case a jacket, and left without paying.

"Police were contacted on both thefts and later that day, they traced the accused, who was still in Largs.

“She was arrested and all the items were recovered.”

Donnachie’s lawyer, Peter Murray, told the court: “She is single and unemployed. Her life has been blighted by drug addiction and these offences were committed to feed that habit.”

Mr Murray said Donnachie was attending an addiction service in Inverclyde and her lifestyle had now changed.

He added: “It is not always plain sailing but she has made significant strides.”

Sheriff George Jamieson told Donnachie: “I am going to recognise the significant improvements you have made and the turnaround in your life.”

Donnachie was admonished and dismissed on both charges.
