A WOMEN's group in Largs is going from strength to strength as they aim to combat loneliness through a new sewing club.

The Largs group of the Scottish Women's Institute (SWI) have started a new sewing club after getting funding from North Ayrshire Council to purchase six brand-new sewing machines and equipment.

And within 48 hours of the announcement that the group was launching a sewing club, 78 women signed up in a remarkable display of community enthusiasm and demand.

The classes, held every Thursday at the Cameron Centre, are set to begin on September 5, and will be led by seasoned sewing instructor Gill Faragher.

Gill said: "The first few days after announcing the sewing club have been a whirlwind.

"There is so much enthusiasm and excitement amongst our new members. It's fantastic."

The sewing club aims to create a community hub for beginners and experienced sewers. It will offer challenges, technical help and masterclasses.

A spokesperson from Largs SWI told the News: "Largs SWI’s sewing club is committed to creating a welcoming, friendly, fun, and positive environment where like-minded individuals from all social demographics can come together to learn new skills.

"The club also aims to reduce loneliness and social isolation by providing a safe space for community interaction.

"Although initially open to women of all ages, there are plans to form an equivalent club or men if there is sufficient interest.

"The club will also be accessible to other women's groups, such as Largs Girl Guides, with their leaders present.

"Additionally, the club plans to 'train the trainers', ensuring a team of skilled individuals can deliver classes and pass on their knowledge."
