A singer has released a new music video in homage to George Harrison and Greta Thunberg which has an important environmental message to help save the planet.

The song is entitled 'Wake Up' and is written by Allan McKenzie of Wemyss Bay.

Allan is well known in Largs where he has been a regular performer in local venues down the decades including Room, Lounge and The Queen's Hotel, and also at Cafe Riva in Inverkip.

Allan, who recently turned 70, appears in a professional video performing his song which includes graphic images of the climate emergency.

It is a personal homage to George Harrison who cared passionately about the environment, and in doing so, has dedicated the song to campaigner Greta Thunberg.

Allan, who originally hails from Port Glasgow, explained: "This song was written as a homage to George Harrison over the period of the Covid pandemic.

"Harrison's environmental concerns were significant within his humanitarian work. The first notions for this song were developed from the question of how he may perceive the world in its current state.

"In addition, this song is dedicated to Greta Thunberg and the environmental efforts of future generations."

"I have written the song in the style of George Harrison and his solo work and I hope it evokes his magical appeal and makes people think.

"I have always felt Harrison to be an enigma. When growing up, I remember seeing The Beatles for the first time on tv and John Lennon looking down the camera and felt it a very new experience the likes of which I had never felt before - it felt that we were on the cusp of something very special and they are in your blood and right under your skin, and they very much are still.

"George is special to me as Paul McCartney and John Lennon took most of the plaudits but to me George was very special and wrote some of the best music I have ever heard including 'Here Comes the Sun' which is apparently the most streamed Beatles song, and other great classics like 'When My Guitar Gently Weeps' which is absolutely stunning.

"I love George's honesty in his lyrics and his performances and he has had a great influence on me."

The new song came to Allan's mind during the pandemic when he was looking out his back window when a news report came on the radio about people going to the sands of Mora and trashing the beautiful beaches with rubbish.

He said: "It made me feel so annoyed and I felt I had to do something about it and this is why I wrote this song to highlight that this is our planet and we need to conserve it and look after it. I love the sands of Mora and we have some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland.

"I feel the song has a wider environmental message and we all play a part in its conservation and its future and we have to look after our environment at all costs.

"That is why I have dedicated the song to Greta Thunberg and all her great work in looking after the environment.

"I hope it makes people aware of their environmental footprint and that we have to do better as the human race.

"The song is called 'Wake up!' and we all need to wake up to the importance of the environment before it is too late."
