A new fundraising page has been launched to support the restoration of a historic Largs fountain which is 150 years old.
We previously reported that the fountain is back in action and sparkling again for the first time in decades thanks to the efforts of the new Largs Community Development Trust.
The fountain at the heart of the Mackerston putting green was built in Victorian times but hasn't worked for around 20 years.
Now it has been brought back to life by the Largs Community Development Trust and Paisley Engineering, who carried out the restoration work.
A new GoFundMe website page has been set up and people can donate to the cause at http://gofundme.com/f/help-restore-largs-mackerston-fountain.
A total of £845 has already been raised in little more than a few days to help with the overall project.
And while the project isn't quite finished, with some work still to do on the surrounding planting, the return to use of the fountain is understandably a cause for celebration for all those involved in the work.
The GoFundMe website states: "Largs Community Development Trust is fundraising to help restore the Mackerston Fountain on the putting green. Paisley Engineering kindly agreed to repair the fountain to operating status.
"We're looking for funds to cover the cost of planting and running the fountain, along with other projects across the town, such as the Main Street planters and flowerbed next to the Blue Lagoon.
Wendy Low Thomson, from the development trust, said: "We are delighted with the fundraising amount so far and can’t thank people enough for your generosity."
"It’s so vital now we all work together to get our town looking good again for everyone’s benefit.
"We will be planting up the base area soon and the ongoing fundraising will help us with seasonal planting and keeping the fountain maintained and running."
The John Campbell Memorial Fountain is named after a physician and surgeon who lived in the town and served its residents for 61 years.
He died on May 14, 1873, and by September of the following year, the people of the town raised £508 to build a fountain in his memory.
The fountain was erected in January 1878 on the esplanade opposite the original Parish Church of St Columba in Gallowgate Street, at a cost of £550.
In March 1881, the fountain was moved to its present site in Mackerston Place, with the cost of moving it met by an anonymous, though wealthy, donor.
