A new shopping development in Largs has taken another step forward with another planning approval.

As recently reported, signage has already been approved for the former M&Co shop at 112 Main Street, and now a new double door entrance and ramp has been given the green light.

We recently reported that planning permission had been sought for new signage at the Main Street building next to the town’s railway station.

The signs indicate that the shop unit could become home to four separate stores – Ponden Home Interiors, Bonmarche, The Edinburgh Woollen Mill and Peacock’s.

Documents published on NAC's website suggest that Peacocks would occupy the largest of the units, with Bonmarche, Edinburgh Woollen Mill and Ponden in smaller units on either side, according to the proposals.

All four are owned by the same parent company, Purepay Retail Ltd, which has its headquarters in Carlisle.

Planning permission has now been approved for alterations to part of shopfront including the installation of recessed entrance doors.

The unit features a large section of glazing to its front elevation facing onto Main Street.

There are two existing entrance doors located to the front of the unit. The unit is located within Largs town centre and is adjacent Largs Train Station. It is proposed to form a further entrance to the front of the unit. A pair of double swing, double doors would be installed which would measure some 1.7m in width and some 2.1m in height.

The existing stallriser would be cut back to suit the proposed recessed entrance.

A ramp would be formed to suit level differences externally. The doors would be aluminium to match the existing finish.

Charlotte Conway, planning case officer at North Ayrshire, said: "The proposed works would have a positive impact on the shopfront and can be supported.

"The main alterations to the shopfront would be the formation of the double doors to create a new entrance and the formation of the ramp.

"All proposed materials would match the finish of the existing shopfront. Given the above, it is not considered that the proposed alterations would have a significant impact on the appearance of the shopfront nor on the amenity of the surrounding area."

As recently reported, North Coast independent councillor Ian Murdoch told members of Largs Community Council that he’d been given a date of September for the new shops to be up and running.

He said: “It is my understanding that the new owners of the former M&Co are hopeful that it will be open by the end of September.

“It might run into October, but September was the date I was given.

"The projected date for completion works is September/October and I’m delighted that the premises will finally be occupied and will bring that area back to life.

“It will be a boost for the retail offering in the town.”
