There will be increased police presence in Largs during the Viking Festival, local officers have confirmed.

The issue of policing and security was raised during a recent meeting of the town's community council.

Community councillor Frank Alexander pointed out that various crime concerns have been raised at previous meetings in relation to unruly behaviour in the town, and he wanted to seek assurances that people will feel safe when walking, particularly in the evenings.

Police representatives at the meeting stated that there would be more resources throughout the duration of the festival - which runs from between August 31 and September 8 - to assist with the large numbers coming and to provide reassurance to the community.

A local policeman at the meeting said: "We want to ensure that everyone is safe, and there is a large number coming down to watch the festival, and we will have extra resources in place across the period."

Community councillor Jim Perman made the point at the meeting that because of the large numbers some locals stay away from the festival, but Independent councillor Ian Murdoch said that most locals 'loved the festival' and couldn't wait for the showpiece occasion to arrive in town.

This year's full Viking Festival schedule  includes a larger Viking Village, the return of the Håkon Håkonsson lecture, and the spectacular Festival of Fire.
