PLANS to transform a derelict building into a three-bedroom home on the outskirts of Largs have been given the green light.

The new owners of Craigton Farm on Brisbane Glen Road submitted an application to North Ayrshire Council in July to convert and extend the former farmhouse.

The site was bought in November last year after it was advertised on the property market.

As previously reported, planning permission was granted to build six tourist eco lodges on the site for short-stay tourist accommodation, with the owners keen to promote local activities such as cycling and fishing.

And according to the West of Scotland Archaeological Service, the site lies within an area that contains recorded archaeological sites from the prehistoric, Roman and medieval periods.

The new plans will see the existing 1.5 storey byre transformed into three bedrooms, two en-suites and a staircase.

In a design and access statement, which can be viewed publicly on the local authority's website, it says that the new owners hope to relocate to the area once the home is complete.

The report said: "The proposals seek to bring back into use an existing structure which has lain derelict for many years.

"The principle of this reuse was established by a previous planning application in 2018 for a dwelling intended as short-term holiday let accommodation.

"The site has since changed ownership and as the new owners, we wish to carry on and complete the work started but with the aim of creating a permanent family home.

"The existing byre structure is to be renovated in the same manner as previously permitted with the appearance of the existing elevations maintained.

"It will therefore continue to be a distinct, recognisable presence and the dominant feature on the site.

"Our aim is to create a highly sustainable home, of high quality in its design and realisation, that contributes quietly to its environment."

The application was approved by council officials on the condition that the developer ensures all records and recovery of archaeological resources within the development are satisfactory with the relevant authorities.
