THE alarm was raised in Millport on Monday night after 'heavily intoxicated' individuals were attempting to sail to Largs.
Cumbrae Coastguard Rescue Team were alerted to the incident, and have put out a warning to people to think first and not to sail while intoxicated.
The island coastguard were tasked just before 8pm on Monday evening to a small vessel which had just left Millport Harbour with three people aboard.
A concerned local landlord had called 999 to report that 'heavily intoxicated patrons' had left their establishment and were intending to launch their vessel as darkness was falling.
The unlit vessel was seen to depart at high speed and after moving around the bay between moored vessels, stopped near to the Clach Buoy and the offshore breakwater before heading east towards the mainland.
A coastguard spokesperson said: "It is never a good idea to take to the water when intoxicated, as judgement and reason can be dangerously impaired even if conditions are favourable and you are familiar with the area.
"Always make sure you are well equipped in terms of equipment, knowledge and experience for the boating activity you are participating in.
"That includes knowing the effects of drugs and alcohol on your ability to make good decisions, and the ability to call for help if things take an unexpected turn."
