ESSENTIAL road resurfacing on the A78 through Largs means that there will be a major closure of the route over a full weekend in October.

The works will see a full closure from 8pm on Friday, October 18 until 8pm on Sunday, October 20, followed by two overnight closures from 8pm until 6am on October 20 and 21.

Traffic management will take place in two phases as follows:

The first phase will see the A78 between Morrisons roundabout and May Street being closed between 8pm on Friday, October 18 and 8pm on Sunday, October 20.

During this time, there will be no access to Irvine Road from Gogoside Road, Lovat Street and Scott Street. Access to Irvine Road will be maintained via Bankhouse Avenue.

Additionally, there will be no access to Charles Street and John Street from Irvine Road, and local access to the town will be maintained from the north and the south.

Temporary traffic lights will be in operation at Morrisons roundabout between the hours of 7am and 7pm on both Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20.

In terms of phase two, the A78 between May Street and Haylie Brae will be closed on October 20 and 21 between 8pm and 6am each night.

Local access to the town will be maintained from the north only. Traffic management will be removed by 6am on Tuesday, October 22.

Signed diversions will be in place for trunk road traffic as follows:

Southbound traffic will take the A78 northbound to Greenock and join the A8 at the Bullring Roundabout, continue to Newark Roundabout and take the third exit on to the A761 through Kilmacolm.

Traffic will then be directed to turn left on to the B790 Houston Road and follow Bridge of Weir Road and the B789 Barrochan Road to Deafhillock Roundabout, taking the second exit and joining the southbound A737.

Traffic will continue south to Beith and take the second exit at Manrahead Roundabout onto the B777, continue to Kilbirnie and take the A760 at Bridge Street towards Largs, where they will be able to re-join the A78 southbound.

Northbound traffic will take the route in reverse.

Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout the works.

An Amey spokesperson said: "Please note, all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.

"This scheme will benefit vehicles using this route each day, by improving the condition of the carriageway and reducing the need for more extensive maintenance in the future."
