YOUNG golfers from West Kilbride Golf club are celebrating success after claiming the Ayrshire Junior Golf League title.

The team of under 18 players claimed back the trophy they last won in 2022 after a nail-biting victory in the competition final against 2016 champions Turnberry.

The competition is played in a league format throughout the season before top sides move into the knockout rounds of the contest.

The final was played between the two golf clubs on Saturday, September 21, at the neutral venue of Loudon Golf Club.

Six players teed it up in the final from each club, with the game played over six singles matches.

One point is awarded to any winning player's team, with each team sharing a half point if the tie is halved.

Finlay Watt and Scott Palin got points on the board early for the village club after they both won their matches.

Turnberry quickly got level with victories over Darren Docherty and Lyle Vogwell levelling the match overall.

Though a win for Jake Hendry put West Kilbride in poll position, needing just half a point from the last match on the course.

And in the closest possible fashion, that half point was delivered by Jack Edmiston who halved his match to get the club over the finishing line.

A club spokesperson said: "Well done to our junior team on winning the Ayrshire Junior Golf League yesterday against Turnberry at Loudoun.

"It was a tight match going down to the last game where we secured a half point for an overall 3.5-2.5 victory.

"Thanks to all the juniors who played for the team this year it wouldn’t have been possible without a strong squad of players.

"Thanks to Iain, Linzi and Ross (club professionals) for all their help developing the skills of our juniors.

"Finally thanks to the parents helping transport the kids to the matches and coming out to support them."
