A PRISONER who stamped on the head of a fellow inmate during a 'pre-planned' assault at Kilmarnock jail has been given further time behind bars.

Mark Davidson, 29, pleaded guilty to being part of a group who carried out the attack at the Ayrshire prison when he appeared at the town's sheriff court on Tuesday, October 1.

The incident took place on February 26, 2022, when Davidson was an inmate at the prison - having been jailed following a previous conviction for assault.

The attack took place within the first floor landing of F-wing in Bowhouse, procurator fiscal depute Jaide Podlesny told the hearing.

The victim was said to have been standing outside his cell when he was confronted by Davidson and four other males.

After a brief conversation, the group asked the man to make his way back into his cell before he was "attacked without warning" by each of the men.

The prosecutor said: "He had no time to react and ended up falling before repeatedly being punched and his head stamped on."

Three witnesses - two prison officers and a prison liaison police officer - quickly intervened and stopped the altercation before locking down the wing.

The male who was attacked sustained minor injuries, a black eye and grazing to various areas, and required no further medical treatment.

Police attended later that day and viewed CCTV footage of the incident - which was shown to the court.

Davidson was identified as one of those involved and after statements were taken he was officially reported.

Ms Podlesny told the court that enquiries remain ongoing with regards to the other inmates involved in the matter.

Davidson's solicitor stated that he accepted his involvement in the assault.

The lawyer added that the 29-year-old was released around two months after the incident and "has been leading a normal, law abiding life" since then.

Addressing Sheriff Murdoch Mactaggart, the solicitor continued: "He accepts the only appropriate disposal is a custodial one - with his previous convictions and analogous offending.

"I ask your lordship to consider that he has dealt with the matter quickly and the period he has spent on remand already."

Sheriff Mactaggart said: “It is clear this was a pre-planned assault. The man was subjected to brief but quite severe violence by that group.

“The consequences could have been a lot more serious.”

Sheriff Mactaggart sentenced Davidson to 18 months imprisonment, backdated to his initial remand on March 13 this year.
