EARLY proposals for a new community radio station have been revealed by the Largs Development Trust.

New broadcast studios would be set up within The Space building in Boyd Street, which has received £92,865 from the North Coast Locality Partnership for a new community building.

It will include a credit union and important financial advice, as well as a space for the community with various projects taking place. Talks with Women’s Aid, Dementia Friendly Largs, and the town's food bank are already under way.

Part of the application for the new trust building included the details about the radio station plans which would have studios in The Space and at Largs Academy.

The documents state that the radio station will be 'at the heart of the community' and will support the local economy with outside broadcasts at local events such as the Viking Festival, and it is hoped it will reach more people and inspire them to attend local events.

All demographic groups will be encouraged to participate in the running and presenting of Largs Radio Station.

The radio station will be housed within The Space, however, it is envisaged that a satellite studio will be established within Largs Academy.

An initial pilot will use internet radio and podcasts to give a feel for engagement, and the development trust is seeking funding for this element of the project which would require software, PCs and mixing equipment within The Space and the Largs Academy studio.

The trust are also seeking to engage local radio producers on the project to get input and help with planning and technical skills, and possibly training. Initial contact has been made with IrvineBeat FM.

The radio station will encourage a wide range of topics to be broadcast including local music groups, and will offer churches the opportunity to have their sermon broadcast on Sundays.

Other programme content being targeted includes a radio book club, Largs Players performing radio plays, phone in and chat show, local information and traffic news.

The report stated: "We could utilise the Helter Skelter funding which is currently waiting to find a suitable project, and have engagement from Largs Academy staff who wish to be fully involved with a satellite studio in the school.

"As well as working with Largs Academy we also aim to encourage young people who have previously disengaged from formal education to come and participate and volunteer with the radio station, enhancing their employability, communication skills, building confidence, self-esteem, and motivation which will support them into employment or further education.

"To ensure all local residents have the opportunity to participate we will work in conjunction with other local organisations and will have an ‘open door’ policy that serves to bring the community together in one location."

The programmes will be inclusive and content directed by the community, led by Largs Community Development Trust.
