LARGS Food Hub has appointed a new chairman following the recent passing of Irene Weir, who was a pioneer behind the movement when it opened earlier this year.

Jean Galloway has taken over the reins and told the News that she looks forward to carrying on the excellent work that had been carried out by volunteers since the community larder opened in February.

The facility has now been operating in the library premises in Allanpark Street since earlier this year.

Jean explained: "We are different from a food bank in that we don’t require people to be referred by other professional agencies.

"Individuals are able to present themselves to the food hub and we are able to offer them assistance with food.

"This is open to people from all walks of life who are struggling with today's cost of living.

"All that is required is for people to attend with a proof of address and register for the service. We operate with a point system allowing people to pay £4 and for this they’ll receive goods worth up to the value of £12.

"The hub is open Tuesday from 2.30pm to 5.30pm and Friday from 10.30am to 12.30pm."

Some of the funding comes from North Ayrshire Council and the hub has also received a donation from the Kelburn Wind Farm, as well as monetary donations from various individuals. In addition the volunteers also fund-raise in order to expand the service and any donations are most welcome.

Jean added: "Funds are used to purchase goods for the hub, but in addition we also get donations from Tesco Express who have been most supportive and helpful. We would welcome further donations from other food retailers in the town.

"The hub is staffed by a range of committed volunteers who attend the Hub on Tuesdays and Fridays."

Donations can be left at Largs library or handed into the hub during opening hours.
