ADVERSE weather conditions will impact the planned works this weekend on the A78 Irvine Road in Largs.

The first phase will see the A78 between Morrisons roundabout and May Street being closed starting on Friday night at 8pm.

However the second phase on Sunday will now not go ahead, with works to recommence on Monday evening to complete phase one, with phase two involving the closure between Anthony Road and May Street, having to be delayed to possibly early 2025.

A spokesperson for Amey, the company that maintains the southwest trunk road network, on behalf of Transport Scotland, said: “Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is commencing Phase 1 works on the A78 Irvine Road, Largs from 8pm on Friday October 18.

"As publicised, these works are very weather dependent and with heavy rain and strong winds forecast over this weekend, a decision has been taken to stand down the works from 6am on Sunday October 20.

"The road will be re-open on a temporary road surface with RAMP signage in place, and the traffic management will be reinstated from 8pm on the evening of Monday October 21 to complete the section from Morrisons roundabout to Bankhouse Avenue.

“Please note, this work remains weather dependent, and any further changes will be communicated via our website www.swtrunkroads.scot and our free roadwork alerts service.

“Unfortunately, the predicted weather conditions mean we are unable to complete Phase 2 of this scheme within the original timeframe of this scheme. However, given the deterioration of the carriageway on the stretch of the trunk road, it is important to complete as much of the work at the most critical locations as soon as possible.

“These works were originally proposed for May 2024, given the weather risk, but after discussion with stakeholders the work was rescheduled for October. We will endeavour to complete the remaining works this year, but given the onset of winter, they may need to be re-programmed for as early as possible in 2025.

“We will continue to keep residents, businesses and other key stakeholders informed of the progress of this scheme, and we want to thank them for their continued support and patience.”
