THE space race and Apollo missions was one of the fascinating highlights of the recent Largs and District Club Stamp evening.
The club was treated to four displays by members invited by the president.
Opening the evening, Dan Ross showed his collection of early Kilmarnock letters, including the earliest recorded mark, followed by other early postmarks from East Ayrshire.
David Bowman took the club through the background to the USA space race, covering Apollo 7 to 17, using in his words "some dubious material".
In the second round John Chalmers took members on his holiday across Canada from Toronto to Vancouver in stamps, postcards and covers.
Ian Smith completed the evening with a display of the reign of King Carol I of Romania, 1940-47, showing how the gradual increase of Russian influence was reflected in the stamps issued.
