NORTH Coast Conservative councillor Todd Ferguson has backed a family petition for speed cameras on the A760 following a tragic death on the road.

Johnny Baxter was involved in a fatal accident on the A760 Kilbirnie to Largs Road on Tuesday, October 15.

His mother, Elizabeth Baxter, started the campaign with the aim of installing speed cameras on the A760 Kilbirnie to Largs road to prevent future incidents.

The crash involved a silver Honda Civic and a white Mercedes B class at around 5.10pm.

Cllr Ferguson said: "I’ve been calling for speed mitigation on this road for many years. I had asked for speed cameras back in February 2023, but so far I haven’t been successful.

"It is tragic that this young man lost his life, my condolences to his family and friends.

"I fully support their campaign to get speed cameras in place. I wrote to North Ayrshire Council officers following this latest tragic accident asking them to raise this again with stakeholders.

"I appreciate 60mph is not a target, but drivers gong at half the speed can lead to poor overtaking decision making. I would call on drivers to drive accordingly and to the conditions of the road and weather."
