A NORTH Ayrshire MSP has sought answers from council bosses over a problem road between Largs and Kilbirnie following a recent fatal crash.
A petition has been launched by the family of Johnny Baxter, who died after a tragic collision on the A760 on October 15.
His mother, Elizabeth, started the campaign with the aim of installing speed cameras on the route to prevent future incidents.
The matter also resulted in concerns being aired at a recent Largs Community Council meeting.
Cunninghame North SNP MSP Kenneth Gibson said: "I realise the above has generated understandable concern of late.
"I therefore asked North Ayrshire Council to investigate if the A760 was a contributing factor in the recent fatality or other accidents and, if so, whether any new safety measures are being considered."
North Ayrshire Council's neighbourhood services responded to Mr Gibson.
They said: “Sadly, there have been several traffic accidents on the A760 at various locations along the length of the road.
“Site meetings are arranged with Police Scotland at injury accident sites across the network to consider if road safety improvements may reduce the number of road traffic accidents.
“Previous improvements to this route include the installation of cats eyes and replacement of anti-skid surfacing.
“Physical speed reduction measures are not suitable for roads with a speed limit in excess of 30mph, the A760 between Kilbirnie and Largs has a 60mph speed limit.
“A meeting was held on site with Police Scotland to consider if further improvements may be helpful in reducing accidents on this route.
"Although specific details of the investigation are not available, it has been confirmed that the road is not a contributory factor in the most recent accident and no improvements have been identified."
Mr Gibson said: "I note that North Ayrshire Council stated that a meeting was held on site with Police Scotland to consider if further improvements may be helpful in reducing accidents on this route but that it was established that the A760 was not a contributory factor in the recent accidents.
"I trust that the above will be useful and provide some reassurance to local drivers and their families."
