A LARGS Academy pupil is proving to be a culinary connoisseur after winning a placement to be mentored by the head chef at Turnberry.

The health and food technology team at the secondary school continue to create the chefs of the future, and none more so than Freddie Finn.

Freddie recently won the South West Scotland heats to make it through to the Scottish final of Futurechef UK in February 2025 with Tristan McNair as a close runner-up.

As part of this amazing experience, he will be mentored by Ryan Murphy, head chef at Trump Turnberry, and will compete against 20 student chefs from across Scotland.

The Springboard FutureChef is a schools-based programme across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland that supports the development of key life skills whilst inspiring young people to pursue an exciting career within the world of hospitality.

It supports students to build industry based culinary skills and knowledge, as well as connecting teachers and students with industry professionals.

The Springboard FutureChef competition is now the biggest school culinary competition in the UK celebrating talent and adding to our long list of successful alumni.

And Ryan Murphy is among the elite having previously served as an executive chef of all hospitality within the largest stadium in Scotland at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.
