A multi-award winning fish and chip shop in Largs has further cause for celebration this week after being named as one of 10 finalists in the running to be crowned the UK's best.

The Fish Works is competing for the coveted Takeaway of the Year title in the National Fish and Chip Awards.

Earlier this month it was reported that out of more than 7,500 chip shops across the country, the popular Largs chippie made it into the prestigious shortlist of 20 for the title.

The line-up has been reduced to the final 10 who will now receive mystery visits that will determine the winner.

The Promenade takeaway is one of only two Scottish businesses among the finalists and will now compete against businesses in Country Durham, Cornwall, Yorkshire and Wales.

As part of the judging criteria for The National Fish and Chip Awards, the panel of sector specialists have examined every aspect of the businesses making sure the bar is set high when it comes to industry and product expertise, sustainable business practice, environmental engagement, employee responsibility, as well as cooking ‘fin-tastic’ fish and chips.

Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, which organises
the awards, said: "It’s no secret that when you enter the National Fish and Chip Awards it’s not going to be an easy ride but it’s to ensure as an industry we keep pushing for absolute excellence as a minimum.

"Customers are at the forefront of what we do so it’s imperative that businesses are serving them to the best of their ability and that’s why we are validating the efforts of this exceptional group which has made it through to the Takeaway of the Year finals.”

The National Fish and Chip Awards is on February 26 at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, where the Takeaway of the Year winner will be revealed.
