THE Draconid meteor shower will peak across Scotland this week, seeing the skies above our heads light up in a glorious display.

The celestial event takes place annually and happens when Earth passes through the debris left behind by Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner.

The debris hits the planet's atmosphere and burns up because of the friction, creating streaks of light across the night sky.

When will the Draconid meteor shower peak across Scotland?

The Draconid meteor shower will be visible across Scotland until Thursday, October 10 with its peak taking place on the evening of Tuesday, October 8.

Will there be clear skies in Scotland for the Draconid meteor shower?

The Met Office has said that cloudy and windy conditions are expected across much of Northern Scotland on Tuesday. Heavy rain is also predicted to dampen the experience for stargazers.

Sunny spells and scattered showers are to occur elsewhere with thundery conditions taking place in much of Southern England.

The upcoming meteor show is best seen with a clear and unobstructed view of the stars on a night with no clouds.

It is also important to find a location with very little light pollution such as the Galloway Forest Park.

While most meteor showers are best seen in the early hours, the Draconids are most visible in the evening, after nightfall.
