In this week’s look back through the photo archives, we have a sporting theme with summer seeing a surge in outdoor leisure activities.
The Largs Fun Run winners were pictured with Brisbane Queen Melanie Lewis 1989 — the fun run ran for over 30 years and was a popular fixture on the local sporting calendar, having started in 1984, and was initially run by the Largs Round Table, before being taken over by Largs Rotary, and raised thousands of pounds for charities over the years.
In 1979, the annual Finlayson Cup, above, was played in Millport — the annual football fixture was always eagerly anticipated on the island.
Meanwhile, at Fairlie Tennis Club Malcolm McAulay was playing in another final with Ian McDonald — Malcolm was to go on to continue winning tennis tournaments at local clubs for many years to come, including singles and doubles titles at Largs Tennis Club.
And much like today, excitement was building for the national football side after qualifying for a major tournament.
West Kilbride pair Heather and Scott Lennon all kitted out for the big games in the 1990 World Cup hosted in Italy, below.
Enhancing Millport’s credentials as Scotland’s cycling island, there was a big crowd at the ready to greet Graeme Obree upon his visit to the Isle of Cumbrae in 1994.
Graeme, nicknamed The Flying Scotsman, is a Scottish racing cyclist who twice broke the world hour record, in July 1993 and April 1994, and was the individual pursuit world champion in 1993 and 1995.
In 1996, Largs Colts embarked on an international mission, and are pictured here heading off on their big adventure which included plenty of well known faces including Andrew McGregor, Steven McCutcheon and Alyn Bowie.
