Largs Thistle legend George Wall writes for the News about football matters local, national and international...
So Scotland's Euro 2024 campaign has come to a juddering halt.
That performance against Switzerland was what we expected. I enjoyed that game. The team showed passion and aggression, all that was missing from the Germany defeat.
The Hungary game saw Scotland with lots of possession but we never seemed to be positive with it. Che Adams up front when we needed to win, with six goals in 31 games but only two in his last 19 for Scotland? Those are not exactly match winning stats.
We were 60 minutes into the game and Scotland had no shots on target. By the end I think it was the same. No Scotland substitutes until 76 minutes, and our first corner on 77 minutes. Both too late.
Lewis Morgan introduced on 88 minutes and Kenny McLean moved to left back. I like that Steve Clarke took the chance with Morgan, but it was too late for me. And is Kenny McLean better than Andy Robertson? If you're changing your left back, replace him with someone similar, not with a midfield player. Greg Taylor was on the bench too.
I think Steve Clarke got his team selection all wrong for a game we essentially had to win. Lawrence Shankland should have started, and maybe he should have taken a chance with Morgan or Conway from the start too - or what about James Forrest? He was probably the form player going into the tournament but never even got on the park.
Are there any positives to take from the tournament? Was it a penalty? I actually thought Armstrong was offside when he got the ball. Maybe that's why VAR did not look at it. Did the team believe the media hype in that they were going to make history?
What a buzzkill it was for the nation.
With all the games played so far I am now leaning towards Portugal to win it. Ronaldo is yet to score and he will.
This Saturday at Barrfields it’s the Pat Rall Memorial Tournament. Let’s see a big turnout, and we can also remember Tommy Scouller, another Largs Thistle stalwart, who passed away this week.
The first game on Saturday is at 11.30am, when Greenock take on Maryhill, and then it is Largs Thistle v Port Glasgow at 2.30pm.
It was a hard night at the office for Largs Thistle's 35s on Friday, when we were beaten 7-3 at Barrfields by Whitletts. The 35s are at home again this Friday, against Knockentiber, with a 6.45pm kick-off.
