Largs Thistle legend George Wall writes for the News about football matters local, national and international...
I took in the Pat Rall Memorial Tournament at the weekend , Maryhill v Greenock Juniors and Largs v Port Juniors games on Saturday and on Sunday it was Greenock Juniors v Port Juniors and Largs v Maryhill.
Largs won the tournament beating Maryhill. It was touch and go for a while but Largs got there in the end.
As Drew Cochrane said during the trophy presentation; “I don’t think Pat would have liked his cup going to Maryhill”.
I know there wasn’t a Player of The Tournament but I would have given it to Conor McKenzie of Greenock who had some great goals and great assists. Typical pre season friendly games for me - there was not much too much to get excited about and not much to hold your attention.
What I took from the Largs games were the central defence is good and there is a need to keep those two fit. Will Sewell needs support up front and the team looks better with Jamie Martin in it but overall it is early days. I was asked who I was supporting, my answer was “all four teams” having spent 14 seasons at Largs, three seasons at Greenock, five seasons at Maryhill and three seasons at the Port.

Never a penalty for Germany, the game is broke. The Danish player Joachim Andersen must be devastated going from hero to zero within a few minutes. What about the card count in the Turkey v Czech game, 18 yellows and 2 reds. I have never seen that in a game before. That was a card happy ref.
England are getting a lot of bad press for their performances but they win their group and they are now in the quarter finals, what more can you ask for at this stage of the tournament? Job going well so far I would say. Those England supporters that left their game before they equalised must be feeling so stupid. It’s never over under the ref blows the final whistle. The excitement and tension in the tournament is really going up now we are are in the knock out rounds. I am really looking forward to the games ahead.
