WELL, I was wrong: Ronaldo never scored and Portugal are out with France winning on penalties.
What a poor game though. I thought Portugal were the better team on the night but if you don’t score goals you don’t win games. What a performance Pepe put in through the whole tournament.
I missed the Germany v Spain game, but from all the comments I have heard it was a good game worthy of being the final.
The England v Switzerland game, for me, was not a great watch but England again got the job done. Can you imagine the abuse Gareth Southgate would have gotten if they had got beaten? He is getting some abuse at the moment and that's after making it to the semi-finals.
Netherlands beat Turkey in the last quarter-final on Saturday night, so we now have the four semi-finalists. For the final, I think we are looking at Spain v England. So far my prediction of the games getting better and more exciting does not seem to be happening.
Largs Thistle's over-35s, sponsored by Cullis Amusements, enjoyed a 9-0 win over Galston in their latest fixture.
I must admit I don't like to see such one-sided scorelines, as they just demoralise the other team, and for me you want it to remain as competitive as possible. The 35s version of the game is more about the social aspect and keeping us fit and healthy. I'd much prefer to win 2-1.
The game was a milestone for me, though, since it featured my first goal for Largs Thistle's 35s. What a volley it was. As I've always said, you don't need to be good if you're lucky!
The goal of the game was Scott McNicol's bullet header from 18 yards, while the other scorers were, James Bennet (aka GM9) who got his usual hat-trick, Mark Kilpatrick who scored twice, Callum Kerr and Robbie Giovino. A mention too for Glenn Martin who is doing his bit in goal and who kept a clean sheet. No game this week for the team.
At the other end of the age range, Sunday saw the semi-finals of the Jimmy Cowan Cup tournament, which I'm organising for the 2008 age group.
Unfortunately Largs Thistle were beaten by Morton In The Community, while Port Glasgow Juniors beat St Andrew's BC in the other semi-final.
On July 21 at Cappielow it's Largs v St Andrew's in the third and fourth place play-off and Morton In The Community v Port Juniors in the final.
I hope all the teams enjoy their day at Cappielow; get along and support the boys if you can.
