Largs Thistle legend George Wall writes for the News about football matters local, national and international...

Not getting beat is always good for the first game of the season, along with a clean sheet, so well done Largs.

In the other games in the opening round of Premier Division fixures, the results that stood out for me were Drumchapel beating Hurlford and Glenafton beating St Cadoc’s.

The other games, I think, went as expected.

At the end of the season I see Clydebank being there or thereabouts. Beith will still be up there and I think St Cadoc’s will make a go of it despite losing to Glens.

It looks to me that Auchinleck are in a rebuild process again and while they cannot be discounted ,I don’t see it happening for them unless Tucker pulls a “rabbit out the hat”, which he is capable of.

At the other end, I think Benburb will struggle - though I hope I'm wrong - and Gartcairn and Troon I expect to be closer to the relegation zone.

The rest of the teams, including Largs I think, will be looking behind them for the full season as all teams are much of a muchness.

I read that Largs are setting their sights on bettering last season's finish where they finished in fifth position. To do that I feel Largs need another striker who  can compete with Will Sewell as top goalscorer. They need more goals in the team.

It's easy for me to say that but it's difficult for Arnie to get such a player. While it would be great if Largs were to win the league - and also I would much rather it was Beith than Clydebank or St Cadoc’s - neither Largs or Beith have the necessary infrastructure at this time that would allow them to compete in the playoffs for a place in the Lowland League.

I very much would like a team from the WoSFL get through the playoffs and into the Lowland League. Let’s get this pyramid working.

Elsewhere, Irvine Meadow's first game after relegation to the First Division showed them how difficult it'll be to get back to the top tier. They took some beating at Meadow Park; the 5-1 hiding from Petershill is a result I don’t think anyone saw coming.

I'm hearing a few horror stories about the SFA’s new registration system, COMET, that was introduced recently. I've been told by a referee at grassroots level that a few games he was assigned were cancelled due to the system, I have also  spoken to two secretaries from clubs in WoSFL who were complaining about it.

This week it was also reported that Partick Thistle were not allowed to put on a substitute as the SFA did a screenshot from the system and missed off the last name on the team sheet . The screenshot was what the fourth official was using, Crazy stuff.

Finally, Largs Thistle 35s, sponsored by Cullis Amusements, got back on track this week with a 8-2 victory against Blacks Bar.

It looked like a case of "here we go again” after Blacks went 2-0 up, but we came back strong and really performed, with Robi Giovino netting a hat-trick and Mark Kilpatrick a double, while Grant Cockerill, Alan Shanks and Andy Boyle also got on the scoresheet.

The 10-team league now splits into two groups with Largs currently sitting fourth. This week the 35s are away to league leaders Whitletts Victoria.
