Cumnock 1 Largs Thistle 3
Will Sewell scored a spectacular hat trick to overcome Cumnock as Largs Thistle recorded their first league win of the season in style at Townhead Park this evening.
The teacher of his own football school at Barrfields this summer applied the science with a trio of goals in 14, 24 and 46 minutes to leave Cumnock chasing this game and the home side managed to notch a late consolation while the ever reliable Joe Wilton in the Largs goal also made a string of important saves.
After a strong start from Largs with Will's opener, Currie in the Cumnock goal denied Blair Devine a quick second. Sewell's second put Largs in command on 24 minutes.
Cumnock had the ball in the back of the net but it was ruled offside on 31 minutes, and then danger winger Jamie Martin screwed an effort just wide as Largs looked to increase the gap.
Cumnock then had their best chance so far with Watt forcing Wilton into a top stop before Devine had another effort on 42 minutes which drew out another save from Currie
So Largs were heading into the break with a comfortable lead but Thistle know only too well from past experience that a two goal lead is often not a sure thing so it was highly pleasing that Thistle started the second half with gusto as Sewell notched his hat-trick on 46 minutes.
Cumnock didn't even have a chance to implement what they had gone through in their half-time pep talk but drove forward and carved out two good opportunities to test the Thistle rearguard.
Wilton had to deny an Orr shot and a Scott effort with his legs as Cumnock showed there was still fight, and on 63 minutes the Largs keeper made a crucial catch to deny the hosts.
David Ramsay then replaced Martin on 68 minutes as Largs introduced some fresh legs.
Cumnock managed to reduce the deficit on 74 minutes through Jamie Wilson and Kieran Brady, fresh from a man of the match winning performance against his former team Johnstone Burgh on Saturday, made a crucial intervention with ten minutes to go.
With the match entering stoppage time Sewell made way for another Largs based striker in Travis Stracey, ensuring a round of applause from the Thistle faithful as he went off, and now has another matchball to add to his collection amassed over the years.
Townhead Park has traditionally been a hard place to go for Largs going back decades with Largs not registering a league win in the modern era there till 2018-19 season.
Over the past five seasons now, Largs have won four times and drawn once as well as won a Scottish Cup tie there two seasons ago, so Thistle have very much turned the tide in this particular clash.
With two games now played in the West of Scotland Premier League, this result puts Largs up to sixth in the West of Scotland Premier League table, and next play eighth placed Hurlford United on Saturday at Barrfields, 2pm kick-off,
LARGS: Wilton McMaster, Bradley, Brady, Hughes, Faulds, Devine, McGrath, Davidson, Martin, Sewelll. Subs: Stracey, Ramsay, Ojungu, McCreath, McGeown, Deas, Johnston (GK)
