Largs Thistle legend George Wall writes for the News about football matters local, national and international...

Although Largs did not play at the weekend they never really lost out with the two teams directly above them in the league being beaten.

At the top of the league Clydebank and Drumchapel both continue their 100 per cent record. At the bottom of the league Shotts and Darvel, after four games played, have yet to pick up a point.

Result of the day for me was Drumchapel beating the Bens 6-2. A big test for Largs coming up with ex-Thistle striker James Marks in the Drumchapel squad.

With Beith away on Saturday it’s two massive games for Largs. Although early days yet, I am surprised to see Irvine Meadow and Ardrossan Winton Rovers sitting in the bottom four after four games played.

Winton are playing their home games at Kilbirnie as their ground is being worked on but that should not be an excuse for them and the Medda, they just need to do better.

Anyone watch the Olympic football final, France v Spain ? If you did not watch it you missed an exciting game with Spain winning 5-3 in extra time.

The woman’s final was not too bad either with USA beating Brazil in the final 1-0.

I see that Callum McGregor has decided to “retire” from international football and that Steve Clarke has said he understands the rationale behind his decision.

Well l don’t. Surely you play until the manager stops picking you. I just don’t get it.

McGregor showed Scotland what they will be missing as he scored with a spectacular shot from outside the area against Hibs yesterday in Celtic's 2-0 victory at Easter Road.

Both Kilmarnock and St Mirren face tricky away trips to Norway this week.

It was interesting to note last week that all the Scottish clubs equalised in the final stages of their respective first legs.

Tromso have been struggling in the Norwegian league this year, as have Killie, who now sit in bottom spot, after two defeats.

Killie have plenty of time to get it right though, while Tromso are deep into their league season.

St Mirren's late equaliser against Brann Bergen has also given them fresh hope heading to Norway this week.
