The Ocean Youth Trust (OYT) Scotland, is offering individuals the chance to sail their 72-ft vessel, Alba Explorer, in a new adults-only challenge.

The Viking Challenge is a unique sailing expedition across the North Sea and around the north of Scotland, taking in some of Scotland’s oldest Norse settlements while raising money for a good cause.

The 13-day challenge will set sail from Esbjerg, Denmark, on August  9 2025 with up to 12 participants, supported by a small team of experienced sea staff from the charity.

All participants will take part in an Induction Weekend two months before the voyage, where they will be introduced to their vessel and life at sea. This preparation ensures everyone, regardless of prior sailing experience, is ready to tackle the open waters with confidence.

The Trust's Chief Executive Officer, Hazel Wiseman, said: “This is a great opportunity for new and experienced sailors alike to meet new people, challenge themselves and raise vital funds for our youth work projects.”

Funds raised through the challenge will go towards supporting Ocean Youth Trust Scotland’s work in delivering life-changing youth work voyages to young people aged 12-25.

The charity supports more than 600 young people each year from a range of backgrounds and circumstances. Through sail training, the charity equips young people with vital skills for life, learning and work.

After their voyage, a young person from Ayrshire College said: “I learnt many new things such as driving the boat, tying knots and putting sails up. I really appreciate the people and sea staff for giving me this privilege to go away and try something new, and I would come back again in a heartbeat.”
