Largs Thistle turn their attentions to the drama of a 90 minute winner-takes-all cup tie against East of Scotland Premier League pacesetters Sauchie this Saturday.

Thistle are shaping up for a second round Scottish Junior Cup encounter with their old foes who they have met several times over the past 20 years.

Boss Davidson will be hoping for an improved performance on Saturday's 2-0 victory over Shotts which didn't really set the heather alight until goals from talisman Will Sewell and defender Cory Hughes in the last 20 minutes catapulted Thistle up to fourth in the Premier.

The Barrfields side came a cropper last year after throwing away a two goal lead to Lochee United in the Scottish Cup in a game which still brings back painful memories. But hopefully this will act as a spur for Thistle to make sure the same thing does not happen again heading into this weekend's contest.

Thistle are high flyers now in the Premier Division, having finished last season in fifth position, and have only lost one league game so far this season against Premier Division champions Beith. But Largs have thrown in three draws, and Saturday's victory very much looked like being a stalemate until Sewell broke the deadlock.

Conor Bradley is an injury concern after receiving a bump to the head. He had to be taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital after kind-hearted supporter Graham drove Conor and his father to the hospital.

Sauchie have also only lost one game in the league, and have picked up some good results including a 2-1 win away at Culter in the second preliminary round of the Scottish Cup.

Speaking in the match programme, Davidson said: "I definitely feel that we should have more points on the board than what we have. We have had some good performances that deserved more points. That's been down to us not taking our chances and giving away the occasional cheap goals. "

The game that disappointed Davidson the most was Thistle's recent 3-3 draw at Benburb in which Largs took the lead three times only to be pegged back on each occasion by the Govan side.

Davidson said: "To go away to Benburb and score three times and still not come away with full points was a sore one.

"In the first few games of the season, we were really solid and didn't give teams many opportunities. In some games the opposition hardly had a shot at goal."

The manager pointed out that the solidity had gone in the games against Beith and Benburb, so a clean sheet against Shotts Bon Accord was a positive sign. But Davidson will be looking for another strong display at the back going into the huge cup tie.

He added that Largs should have defended better in these two previous games in which Largs conceded five goals and called it 'uncharacterstic'.

Davidson said: "I emphasise to the boys that we want to play good football, but we have to keep it tight at the back, to give us a platform to win games. We need to get back to limiting chances by defending set-pieces well, as well as stopping crosses, and shots at goal. We need to get our consistent levels of concentration back."

He hopes Largs can resurrect the form which saw them overcome Cumnock and Drumchapel in style with a 3-1 away win and a 2-0 home win respectively earlier in the season.

He added: "These were the matches I was most pleased with, and Drumchapel edged it as we didn't concede.

"I felt in those two games we won the individual battles all over the pitch. When we dominate like that then teams find it very difficult against us. It only takes two or three players not winning those battles and it becomes so much harder. We need to have the same mentality for every game and if we do we will more games than we drop."

Please note it is a 2.30pm kick-off.
