Largs Thistle legend George Wall writes for the News about football matters local, national and international...

It is a great move for Billy Gilmour going to Napoli. A real character tester for him but with Scott McTominay there too I am sure it will make the change to his environment and his lifestyle a lot easier. Let’s hope both Billy and Scott are stand outs. I also see that Napoli have now signed Romelu Lukaku on a permanent basis. He has had some amounts of moves to top clubs with around £400M in transfer fees for him.

Who was it that decided not to sign Erling Haaland at Man Utd when he was offered to them? How that person must be regretting that decision, if they are still with Manchester United of course. What a fantastic striking display from the Norwegian who was absolutely clinical on Saturday.

On paper it was a win for Largs Thistle, and on the park it was an important three points and another goal for Will Sewell. The next couple of weeks are cup games so a break from the league is an interesting period and Largs will be fighting on all fronts to stay in all the cups for as long as they can. The two cup games coming up will be tricky. You would expect a win against Bellshill but Sauchie who are the next visitors to Barrfields in the Scottish Cup are sitting top of the East of Scotland League and will present a different challenge. Sauchie though have a league game scheduled for midweek so that might work to Largs’ advantage.

International fixtures are back with Scotland at home to Poland and then away to Portugal this week in the Nations League. After the poor performances at the Euros, I think Steve Clarke really needs his team to give a performance. Big question still though is who is going to score goals? Since the Euros and until the recent squad was announced, it all was quiet from the Scotland camp apart from announcing Calum McGregor was leaving international football so who knows what we are going to see.

There are four uncapped players in the squad, Ben Doak, Ryan Gauld, Max Johnston and the goalie Robby McCrorie but will any of them play?

Largs Thistle 35’s sponsored by Cullis Amusement finished their season with a 1-1 draw against Glenburn at Inverclyde. It was that man James Bennet AKA “Goal Machine“ that scored our only goal with a great left foot strike from 12 yards into the postage stamp. It’s been a tough season for the team despite a top half finish.
